Nishi-nippon Shinbun, Newspaper, 24 October 1998 "The main character is this person" Tell me the things you care very much about, please. What am I? There might be no border between another person and myself; they become one after we die. If it were so, I should associate with other people more, and try to understand others positively. It would be the best way to know myself, indeed. This hypothesis is made by Rica Takashima and she actually experiences and tries to prove it at her exhibition "Chumon no Ooi Tenrankai-Multiple Request Gallery” which was held at Canal City Hakata in Fukuoka. Rica paints people’s important things by request. For example, a newspaper article, a beeper message which was not erased for a year, or a present that was never given to a lover, etc.. These things have a reason to be important for them and the reasons project their owners' personality. Rica Takashima believes that when she paints these requests with actual episodes, it might help her to understand herself. This exhibition is a part of the public biennial art event Museum City Fukuoka 1998. Rica stayed in Fukuoka for two months in the Artist in Residence program and created most of her pictures during the event period. She was initially supposed to go back to Tokyo as she had planed, but she decided to stay longer to complete her works and responded to all her requests. She simply thought that expressing somebody's mind would be the biggest issue in her life. Rica does not know what is the answer to her hypothesis, she just keeps working on and on. |
