"Rica 'tte Kanji!?" was first published as a book by ALC Publishing in New Jersey (USA) in 2003. This then prompted a Japanese publisher, Terra Publications, to also release it in Japan later that same year. In 2006, the book was included on the recommended reading list of a comparative cultural anthropology class (A Cross-Cultural Look at Non-Heteronormative Sexualities) at Brandeis University in Boston. In 2009, the book was included on the recommended reading list of on Japanese culture through animation and manga class (The professor's name is Noriko Day.) at UCLA.
