"HOKOTEN Sketch Rally"
|
When you hear the term “sketch,” you would probably think of drawing a model at rest with a pencil or other media, and what is considered to be important here is to draw a model to the life. Rica Takashima raised some doubts over such conventional method of doing the sketch: “Why the model should not move around?” “Why should the finished drawing always have to resemble the model?” (“Why the model has to be drawn to the life in sketch?”) The “Hokoten Sketch Rally” is an art activity which was initiated on the street hoping to provide people with a venue to discard preconceived ideas about a sketch and enjoy doing a sketch without having to impose any restrictions on what they would draw and the way they do so. There are three ways to participate in the “Hokoten Sketch Rally” activity: “Being a model”, “Doing a sketch”, or “Being an observer.” What is interesting about this project is that the participants were all passers-by who happened to be walking by the exhibition area and they have all volunteered to be a part of this exciting event. For one session, the participants were allowed 10 minutes to sketch. The passers-by who wished to participate in the activity as models took turns (to become models.) The models were free to move around striking a fashionable pose, to dance and to do whatever they felt like doing in the hand-made costume prepared by the Aozora Art staffs. The paper and other art supplies necessary to do a sketch had been prepared in advance by the Aozora Art staffs. The participants who decided to be a part of the activity by doing to sketch were free to draw whatever they liked using paper and drawing tools of their choice. The passers-by, who were lost in admiration looking at the participants bringing up their unique drawing to a perfection in such a short time frame (10minutes), unintentionally paused at the exhibition area, and found joy in participating in the project as “being an observer” without even knowing that they had actually being a part of this event. The Aozora Art staffs with a portable microphone made play-by-play comments, introducing the participants who volunteered to draw and exchanging conversations with the participants who chose to become models. They presence has made the activity fun and happy. The finished sketch was put on display, and had people take a look at it right on the spot. The participant could take it home with him/her if he/she liked. Rica Takashima, had initially feared that many people would be reluctant to participate in the activity when they were asked to draw in public for being too shy. On the contrary to the expectation, the “Hokoten Sketch Rally” in fact attracted far more people than expected. Perhaps, providing the participants with an environment in which they could draw as they liked, they have come to know of a joy in drawing. There was an adorable incidence in which a dog, which was taken out for a walk, became a model of the activity. Consequently, the day in which the “Hokoten Sketch Rally” was held happened to be the birthday of one of the female participants who volunteered to become a model. The tourists from France and Korea along with some of the Japanese people visiting from other prefectures, who were all participants of the activity, all decided to give out their finished drawing to this female participant as her birthday present. The “Hokoten Sketch Rally” ended with a number of such memorable episodes. It was only by coincidence that many of the participants, who had not touched brushes and paints for several decades since leaving grade school, happened to come across the exhibition area, and decided to take a part in the “Aozora Art” activity. Nevertheless, they all reacted favorably to the “Hokoten Sketch Rally.” |
