"Love Love Ceremony"
|
This exhibit contains representations of “wedding ceremonies” that are responses to the question: “if you could free yourself from constraints such as your nationality, gender, and social climate, whom would you marry?” In “Love Love Ceremony”, the participant could become and then also “marry” anyone or ones they pleased, regardless of number, gender, ethnicity even species or animate/inanimate status, through the use of Rica Takashima's myriad “Kaodashi-Kun” or Peek-a-Boo boards. Commemorative photos of the couples or groups were taken and attached to faux marriage certificates witnessed and co-signed by Aozora Artists or passersby and bystanders. The couples or groups then recited wedding vows and were presented with their certificate as a live band performed a wedding march. After their ceremony, the participant then chose whatever surname they wished to use. Some people who saw the flyer for “Love Love Ceremony” called in to protest that “being allowed to marry anyone that you wished is irrational and unsound.” At the same time, Rica (along with the other Aozora Artists) also received a lot of media coverage about the installation. This proved that the concept of “marriage” is one that many people feel strongly about. The created configurations were not confined merely to traditional heterosexual adult pairings, but also included a young girl who proclaimed “I am going to marry my papa when I grow up!” and held the wedding ceremony with her father, a couple consisting of two elementary school children, same sex pairings (both male-male and female-female), and even one male participant who casually invited his girlfriend along and then proposed to her for real at the workshop. The following dialogue took place when Rica Takashima was interviewed by a person (who was) studying Japanese Art in Denmark: D: How many times did you get “married” during this workshop? D: And have you become divorced? D: Oh, wow! 'Cuz polygamy is still not allowed in my country (LOL). 「もしも、国籍も性別も時代からも自由になったら、あなたは誰とどんな結婚をするのでしょうか?」ということをテーマにした「結婚式」を模倣したインスタレーションです。 参加人数:355人(計12回) |
