Recently I visited Networking Fair 1997 where Rica Takashima, contemporary artist, showed her work that ingeniously incorporated Internet technology into art. The following is the report on Rica's exhibit and the latest digital camera technology featured at the Fair.
Focusing mainly on home computing, the Second Networking Fair for Women showcased innovative ways multimedia could be integrated both at work and home environments.
Among mostly corporate booths, Rica hosted the private booth titled "Art Palmistry" where visitors and the artist created communication art together. She was later joined by Hiroshi Sasaki, Internet expert, to discuss her experiences as an artist on digital technology.
Rica Takashima has worked on illustrations and designs for numerous TV programs and commercial films. "I think that art should be more enjoyable and easier to understand for ordinary people," Rica says of the motto for Aozora Art series, audience-centered performance art installations she has been offering since the early 1990s.
While her signature style can be summarized as warmth and people-oriented openness, she was one of the first artists who brought multimedia technology into arts.
